City kids learn about country life

A new classroom to teach city kids in the countryside has been given the green light.
An education trust from Hackney in East London asked for a new classroom building for its centre at Kench Hill, Appledore Road, Tenterden, and it was unanimously approved by Ashford planning councillors. The Learning Trust, a non-profit making company, uses a Grade II Listed building on the site to teach urban children about the countryside.
It has now applied for an L-shaped 18.3 by 11.9m single storey classroom to replace a portable cabin it has had to use.
Planning officers had recommended refusal, saying the development was bulky and over-dominant and affected the setting of the listed building.
But councillors supported it, saying it was an appropriate development, had local support and was much needed.
